Starlink
Satellite internet from SpaceX. How it works, where to buy it and where to borrow one.
What it is
Starlink is satellite internet delivered through a dish (the Starlink terminal) on the ground and satellites in orbit. SpaceX started building the constellation in 2019 and has been adding satellites ever since. The satellites orbit at around 550 km. A ground station acts as the gateway to the internet. Newer satellites carry laser links, so your data can hop between satellites in the constellation to the nearest gateway. See starlink.sx for gateway locations.
Each country also has to license Starlink as an internet provider. Starlink is licensed in most EU countries, in the Americas and in Australia, and the list keeps growing. Check the coverage map and the maritime coverage map.
How it works in practice
Starlink is handy abroad and at a cottage. Unpack the dish, plug it in and within seconds you are online. The dish needs a clear view of the sky, which is hard to get in dense city areas.
Starlink also works for camper vans and trailers. You pay extra for the Roam plan and you do not get the guaranteed speed and availability of the Residential plan.
